Lenny’s idea of retirement is working even harder

ABOVE: Lenny Jones and his wife, Mary, have been married for 20 years. They enjoy going to estate sales, concerts, traveling and spending time with family.

Lenny Jones worked at the same place for 35 years, retiring two years ago at age 55. That doesn’t mean he’s sitting idly by. He travels, goes to estate sales, and enjoys getting his hands dirty, especially in our parish where he helps keep the grounds stellar — inside and out — and dabbles in landscaping. Most of all, Lenny is a nice guy.

You worked as the assistant printing supervisor at Oneida BOCES for 35 years. What did that job entail and what kind of satisfaction did you get from that job?

I printed all the newsletters and calendars for the school districts in Oneida County. I was part of the interviewing team for hiring new people in the print shop, plus I would train new employees. I loved it when the people from the districts would call to let us know they were happy with the finished product.

You and your wife enjoy going to estate sales. What was the best item you ever picked up? I bought a $6 end table that was all warped on the top. I had it refinished, and it looks brand new.

You both like to travel throughout the U.S. What is your favorite spot and why?

Cape Cod because of the water and so many places to go and see.

You said you like “getting your hands dirty,” doing a lot of landscaping. Why do you love that so much?

I love seeing the finished product.

Concerts are another major pleasure. Who have you seen in concert and who is your favorite?

I have been to a lot of concerts. My favorite was Rush in its1982 Signals world tour.

You love sports, especially the Yankees and Dallas Cowboys. What drew you to sports and those teams?

I have always loved the Yankees, win or lose. The Dallas Cowboys are America’s Team. I had the honor to meet Tom Landry. He and Roger Staubach are the reasons that made me like the Cowboys.

In our parish, you and Pat Morrissey take care of our parish campus. Why did you want to do that kind of work after you retired?

I’ve always loved giving back to this community. I knew I could not sit idle.

You’re also a Eucharistic minister an usher. What drew you to our parish and what does it mean to you?

My wife and I love the people and the parish.

How has your faith guided your life?

I’m a very grounded person. The Lord has been so good to me throughout my life. I’m also an adorer at St Joseph St Patrick Church in Utica.

Everyone I talk to says “Lenny is a nice guy.” What does that mean to you?

I really enjoy talking to all the parishioners at the church and helping out any way I can.
